Welcome to the Lower School at Rokeby

Smart, Skilful, Kind from the Very Start

Our Lower School (Reception to Year 2) is where boys aged 4 – 6 begin their journey to becoming smart, skilful, and kind young learners. Led by Lucia Sanderson, Head of Lower School, we provide a warm, structured, and nurturing environment where every boy is known, supported, and encouraged to thrive.

At Rokeby, we understand that the early years are a vital time for growth. That is why our approach blends play-based learning, emotional development, and the building of strong foundational skills in literacy, numeracy, and communication. Through purposeful play and guided exploration, boys develop curiosity, confidence, and a love of learning.

With small class sizes and a focus on nurturing both a love of learning and character, Rokeby’s Lower School lays the foundation for each boy to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally, so that when he leaves Rokeby at 13, he is a confident, positive, happy and successful young man.

Alongside their dedicated class teacher, boys are taught by specialist staff in French, Music, Drama, PSHE, Games, and PE, enriching their learning experience from the very beginning.

We understand the needs of today’s families. That is why we offer wraparound care from 7:30am to 6:00pm, giving working parents the flexibility they need and providing boys with the consistency and comfort of an environment they know and love.

“Childhood should be delightful, exciting, and time for a child to take in the world with their senses. Each child progresses at their own pace, please try not to worry about what your son can or can’t do at this stage. What matters most is that your son is ready to begin his learning journey. Boys join us from age 4 and have many years of learning, discovering, and development ahead of them. It’s a journey, not a race and we are here to support them all the way through.”
